Mauni Amavasya, also known as Maghi Amavasya, falls on the no moon day (Amavasya) during the Krishna Paksha of Magha month. On this day, people take a holy dip in sacred rivers and observe silence, as prescribed in scriptures. It is considered auspicious to make donations and perform rituals like bathing on this day.

Taking a dip in a sacred river followed by charitable activities on Mauni Amavasya brings auspicious results. The merits of donations and worship on this day are said to be thousands of times more potent than on other days, and it helps alleviate the effects of planetary disturbances. Offering milk to the sun with sesame seeds after morning bath is also considered beneficial.

When is Mauni Amavasya?

According to the Hindu Panchang, this year Mauni Amavasya in the Krishna Paksha of Magha month begins on the morning of February 9 at 8:02 AM and concludes on the next day, February 10, at 4:28 AM. Hence, Mauni Amavasya will be observed on February 9 this year.

Significance of Mauni Amavasya:

Among all Amavasya dates, Mauni Amavasya is considered the most auspicious. Observing silence on this day is highly beneficial. Taking a morning bath in a sacred river is advised, and for those unable to do so, bathing at home with Ganga water is recommended.

Additionally, on this day, it is considered auspicious to donate sesame seeds, sesame laddoos, sesame oil, clothing, and amla. Offering prayers and water to ancestors (Pitras) and reciting specific mantras like Kanakadhara Stotram along with burning cloves and camphor as prescribed in scriptures are believed to alleviate financial difficulties.

Remedy/Totke of Mauni Amavasya

• Furthermore, during the night of Mauni Amavasya, releasing five red roses and five lit lamps in a flowing river is said to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. Offering arghya to the sun during sunrise and lighting a ghee lamp near the tulsi plant with 108 circumambulations can bring purity and dispel various troubles.

• On Mauni Amavasya, color rice with saffron and place it inside a divine or south-facing conch shell. Light the lamp with ghee and recite 11 malas of Mahalakshmi mantra, 'Om Shreem.' This is believed to attract wealth.
• Feeding Ants, Fish, and Birds: On Mauni Amavasya, feeding ants with sugar, fish with flour balls, and arranging grains and water for birds are considered auspicious.

• Deepak with Saffron: In the evening of Mauni Amavasya, place a ghee lamp with saffron in the northeast direction of the house. Use red thread instead of cotton in the wick. If possible, add a few saffron strands to the lamp. This is believed to please Goddess Lakshmi and increase wealth in the home.

• Tarpan and Pind Daan: If there is Kaalsarp dosha or pitru dosha in the birth chart, perform tarpan and pind daan for ancestors near the banks of a sacred river under the guidance of a qualified priest to mitigate these doshas.

• Feeding the Disabled and Weak: On Mauni Amavasya, offer clothing and food to beggars, disabled individuals, and the poor. This act is believed to bring peace and diminish the negative effects of planets.

• On Mauni Amavasya, light a lamp with sesame oil and black sesame seeds near the main door of the house in the south direction in the name of ancestors. Also, make a roti with flour and black sesame seeds and feed it to a cow. This practice is said to bring prosperity, peace, and the blessings of ancestors to the home.

• Pipal Tree Worship: Worshiping the pipal tree on Mauni Amavasya is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that Lord Vishnu resides in the root of the pipal tree, Lord Shiva in its trunk, and Lord Brahma in its branches. Therefore, performing puja and circumambulation of the pipal tree on Amavasya brings happiness and prosperity.

• On the night of Mauni Amavasya, light seven lamps made of wheat flour under the pipal tree. It is believed that all the desires of devotees will be fulfilled by doing so.

• Performing worship of the Peepal tree on the day of Mauni Amavasya is highly regarded. It is believed that Lord Vishnu resides in the roots, Lord Shiva in the trunk, and Lord Brahma in the top part of the Peepal tree. Therefore, worship and circumambulation of the Peepal tree on Amavasya are said to bring an increase in happiness and prosperity.

• On the day of Mauni Amavasya, observe your reflection in milk, and then feed that milk to a black dog. This practice is believed to free you from the malefic effects of celestial bodies and promote well-being.

• On Mauni Amavasya, pour milk in  a well and add black sesame seeds and a few pieces of iron. Ensure that no one observes you during this process. This remedy is said to alleviate family troubles and pave the way for progress in life.
