Magha Purnima: Significance, Rituals, and Benefits

Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu are specially worshipped on the day of Magha Purnima. It is believed that on this day, any devotee who worships with a true heart will have happiness, prosperity, and success in their life. They will also receive the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu.

Magha Purnima Puja Vidhi:

  • On the day of Magha Purnima, one should take a bath in the Ganges River at Brahma Muhurta. If bathing in the Ganges is not possible, one can take a bath with Ganges water mixed in water.


  • After bathing, offer Arghya while chanting the mantra "Om Namo Narayana."

  • Donate warm clothes and jaggery to the poor according to your faith on the day of Magha Purnima. By doing this, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is pleased and one gets the benefit of wealth.


  • On this day, donate food to a temple or to the poor according to your capacity.

  • You can also donate Dakshina on the day of Magha Purnima. Its auspicious fruit is returned to the person many times over.


  • On this day, it is considered auspicious to feed Kheer to girls after worshiping Lord Vishnu in the morning.


Importance of Ganga Snan on Magha Purnima:

According to mythological beliefs, the deities come to earth in the month of Magha, hence the special importance of bathing and donating on this day.


According to the scriptures, Magha Purnima is considered very special for those who perform bathing and meditation with restraint while living on the banks of the Sangam River in the month of Magha, because on this day they complete their Kalpavas tradition.


It is considered very auspicious to take a bath in the Ganges at Prayagraj on this day. This fulfills all the desires of the person. and leads to the attainment of salvation.

  • On Magha Purnima, there is a provision for the worship of the moon and Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Worshiping Goddess Lakshmi on this day leads to happiness and prosperity. Also, worshiping the moon at the time of moonrise on Magha Purnima removes the lunar defect.


Do these remedies on Magha Purnima:

  • To get the grace of Goddess Lakshmi, offer Bhog, lamp, and water to Tulsi after bathing on the morning of Magha Purnima.


  • At the time of moonrise on Purnima, offer Arghya to the moon by mixing sugar and rice in raw milk and chanting the mantra "Om Sran Srim Sroum Sah: Chandramse Namah:" or "Om Aim Kleem Somay Namah:". This strengthens the moon.


  • To gain wealth, offer 11 cowries on the idol of Goddess Lakshmi on the day of Magha Purnima and apply tilak with turmeric on them.
