Chaitra Purnima has special importance in Hinduism. Chaitra Purnima is called Chaiti Poonam. Because in Treta Yuga, on the full moon of Chaitra month, Lord Shiva's part and Lord Rama's supreme devotee Hanuman was born.

During this auspicious day, Lord Shri Krishna engaged in the enchanting Raas dance with the Gopis in the divine region of Braj. There will be no shortage of money in the house by worshiping Goddess Lakshmi at night on the day of Chaitra Purnima. On this day, donating sesame, water, grains, sugarcane, fruits and clothes among the poor people, all the troubles will go away.

There is special importance of worshiping the moon on the full moon day. Moon and Lord Satyanarayan are worshiped on the full moon day.

Along with this, the festival of Hanuman Jayanti is also celebrated on this day. Lord Vishnu is worshiped on this day. Moon is worshiped on full moon night.

On the day of Chaitra Purnima, there is a tradition of bathing and donating in a river, pilgrimage, lake or holy water body. Bathing and donating on the day of Chaitra Purnima gives good results.

Chaitra Purnima date and auspicious time:

There is confusion regarding the date of Chaitra Purnima. The Chaitra Purnima will start from 9:20 am on April 5 and it will remain till the next day i.e. April 6, 2023 at 10:5 am. And those who observe the full moon fast can observe the full moon fast on 5th April.

On the other hand, due to the full moon on 6th April, the festival of Hanuman Jayanti will be celebrated on 6th April. On the other hand, there is special importance of evening worship on full moon day, so those who keep fast on full moon day will keep their fast on 5th April. Satyanarayan fast will be observed on 5th April only.

Chaitra Purnima fast will be observed on 5th April but according to Udayatithi, full moon bath will be on 6th April 2023.

Chaitra Purnima is also celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Hanumanji, the supreme devotee of Lord Rama. That's why the full moon of Chaitra month has its own special significance. It is also the first full moon of the year according to the Hindu calendar.

By doing charity on the day of Chaitra Purnima, a person gets freedom from his sins. Along with this, all the wishes of the person are also fulfilled.

Along with this, there are also beliefs that worshiping Tulsi on this day brings special blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. Along with this, by worshiping Shri Krishna and Narayan with full rituals on this day, the infinite grace of God is received.

What to do on full moon day:
  • On the full moon day, get up early in the morning and take a bath before sunrise. While taking a bath, definitely add Ganges water in the water.
  • After taking a bath , offer water to the Sun God while reciting mantras of the Sun. After this take the vow of fasting and worship Lord Satyanarayana.
  • After this, worship the Moon God at night. Then offer Arghya to Chandra Dev with milk.
  • Hanuman Jayanti is also celebrated on Chaitra Purnima, so reciting Hanuman Chalisa is also auspicious.
  • The story of Satyanarayan should be heard on the full moon day. A toran made of mango leaves should be tied at the main gate of the house. 
  • It is believed that performing this act brings immense joy to Goddess Lakshmi and earns her divine blessings. On the day of full moon, one should take a bath by mixing Ganga water in water and taking Kush in hand.
  • Peepal trees should be worshiped on full moon day to please Mahalakshmi. It is said that Goddess Lakshmi resides in Peepal.
  • Worshiping Lord Shiva on the full moon day gives auspicious results.
What not to do on Chaitra Purnima:
  • Do not consume garlic, onion, meat-alcohol etc. on this day
  • Celibacy should be followed on this day.
  • On this day happiness and peace should be maintained in the family.

  • After worshiping Goddess Lakshmi on the day of Chaitra Purnima, offer kheer or white colored sweets at night. It is believed that by doing this Goddess Lakshmi is pleased and all the problems in life go away.
  • It has been told in the scriptures that on the full moon day, Goddess Lakshmi resides in the Peepal tree. That's why offer water to the Peepal tree on this day and light a lamp under the tree in the evening.
  • On the day of Chaitra Purnima, worship of the Moon is also of special importance. Therefore, at night, offer arghya to the Moon by mixing rice with raw milk and chanting 'Om Sran Srin Sraun Sa: Chandramase Namah' or 'Om Aim Klim Somaya Namah: ' Recite the mantra.
  • To remove the problems coming in married life, on the day of Chaitra Purnima, husband and wife together offer Arghya to Chandra Dev. It is believed that by doing this the problems in life go away.
  • Worship of Hanuman ji also has special significance on the day of Chaitra Purnima, so recite Hanuman Chalisa in the morning and evening on this day and Chanting the sacred mantra "Om Namo Bhagwate Hanumate Namah" for a minimum of 108 repetitions is recommended
How to fast on Chaitra Purnima:
  • If you take a vow to fast on the full moon day, then take a vow of fasting after taking a bath.
  • Then worship Lord Vishnu along with Goddess Lakshmi and worship at home or temple.
  • Recite Satyanarayan Katha along with Vishnu Pujan and tell it to all the family members.
  • Perform Havan after Katha and 108 times continuously Gayatri Mantra. And chant Om Namo Narayan mantra.
  • Consume fruits for the whole day and break the fast on the next day.
