Know the Rules Before Lighting a Lamp at the Main Entrance of Your Home

In Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism), lighting a lamp holds significant importance. A lamp not only dispels darkness but also fills the house with positive energy and eliminates negativity. It is considered a means to please deities and ancestors. Especially in the evening, at sunset, there is a tradition of lighting a lamp at the main entrance of the house. It is believed that this is the time when Goddess Lakshmi enters the home. However, due to a lack of knowledge, people sometimes make mistakes while lighting a lamp, which can lead to unfavorable results. Let’s understand the correct rules for lighting a lamp.

Rules for Lighting a Lamp

Light the Lamp at the Right Time

It is considered auspicious to light a lamp at the main entrance during the Pradosh Kaal (the time after sunset).

Proper Direction and Placement of the Lamp

  • A lamp made of clarified butter (ghee) should be lit for Goddess Lakshmi and placed on the left side of the main entrance.

  • If ghee is not available, use sesame or mustard oil for the lamp and place it on the right side.

  • The lamp should ideally be placed in the east or north direction of the main entrance, as it is considered auspicious.

  • A lamp in the south direction is lit only for ancestors.

Type of Lamp

  • A clay lamp is considered the most auspicious.

  • If a clay lamp is unavailable, a brass lamp can be used.

Place Water Alongside the Lamp

  • Keep a container or glass of water near the lamp.

  • While the lamp dispels darkness, water is believed to destroy negative energy.

Do Not Close the Door

  • Do not shut the door after lighting the lamp.

  • Closing the door can hinder the entry of Goddess Lakshmi into the home.

Maintain a Clean Environment

  • Avoid keeping shoes, slippers, or trash bins near the main entrance.

  • These items attract negative energy and increase the influence of Saturn (Shani).

Attend to the Lamp After It Burns Out

  • Once the lamp is extinguished, place it in a spot where it won’t be stepped on.

  • Keep the main entrance clean and well-decorated.

A Way to Attract Prosperity and Positivity

Lighting a lamp is not just a religious ritual but a method to attract positive energy and prosperity into your home. By following the rules of proper direction, type of lamp, and cleanliness, you can seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and the deities. Observing these guidelines ensures peace, happiness, and prosperity in the house.
