How did Maa Parvati become Navdurga
According to Markandeya Purana, Durga was born in her previous birth as the daughter of Prajapati Daksha. Then Durga's name was Sati. She was married to Lord Shiva. Once Prajapati Daksha organized a very big yajna. He invited all the gods to participate in this yajna, but did not invite Lord Shiva. Seeing Sati insisting on going to see her father's yajna and meeting her family members there, Lord Shiva allowed her to go there.

Prajapati Daksha also spoke derogatory words to the Lord. Seeing all this, Sati's mind was filled with shame and anger. She could not bear the insult of her father and she burnt herself in the yajna and turned to ashes.
In the next birth, Sati took the form of Nav Durga. When the gods were defeated in the war between gods and demons, they invoked the aadi shakti and one by one the above nine Durgas entered the battlefield and with their strategy, they killed the demons who were spread in the earth and heaven.
