- This Pitru Paksha Amavasya is also called as Mahalaya Amavasya. Pitru Paksha is considered as an important day. On these days Tarpan and Shraddha are performed for the peace of the ancestors. Pitru Paksha lasts for full 15 days, on its last day Amavasya falls. We also refer to Mahalaya Amavasya as Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
- According to other scriptures, Maa Durga comes to earth every year on this day. And the devotees invoke Mother Durga on this day on earth. Mahalaya Amavasya is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya. This year, the Sarva Pitru Amavasya will be celebrated on 25th September. On Mahalaya Amavasya, people take a dip in the holy river and perform Tarpan, Pind Daan, Shradh and farewell to their ancestors. Abhijit Muhurta: 11:48 a.m. to 12:37 p.m

Vijay Muhurta: 2:13 p.m. to 3:01 p.m.
What to do on Mahalaya Amavasya:
- Offer food to the Brahmins on Mahalaya Amavasya and give them dakshina. It is believed that by doing this, the souls of the ancestors find peace.
- On the day of Mahalaya Amavasya, offer the ancestors Tarpan with water mixed with milk, sesame seeds, Kusha and flowers.
- For the sake of the ancestors, prepare food of their choice and give it to the crow, cow and dog.
- It is believed that by performing Shradh on Mahalaya Amavasya, the ancestors attain salvation and are freed from the bondage of birth and death.
- Offer prayers on Amavasya for the ancestors whose date of death is not known.
