Although there are a total of 24 Ekadashi tithi in every month and two in a year, Nirjala Ekadashi has the highest importance. In the scriptures, Nirjala Ekadashi has been described as the most auspicious and virtuous of all the 24 Ekadashi. 



The Nirjala Ekadashi fast is believed to be equivalent in virtue to all other Ekadashi fasts combined. This fast is named "Nirjala" because it prohibits even the consumption of water. Among all the Ekadashi fasts, it is considered the most challenging yet rewarding one, as it is said to receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu. To ensure a successful observance of the Nirjala Ekadashi fast, it is important to be aware of what actions to take and avoid on this auspicious day.



Here are some guidelines on what actions to take and what to avoid during the observance of Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi fast is considered the most difficult. At this time the heat is high and it is also forbidden to take water during this Ekadashi fast. So you have to keep yourself mentally strong. 


Meat, alcohol and vengeful food items should not be consumed from the day before Nirjala Ekadashi fast. On the other hand, on the day of Dashami, eat only satvik food. 


During Nirjala Ekadashi fast, it is essential to practice self-restraint and celibacy, prioritize acts of charity such as donating a Kalash filled with water and providing water to the thirsty,

and demonstrate compassion by arranging water and grains for animals and birds under a tree on the roof of your house or in an open area.


On the day of Ekadashi, even a broom should not be used in the house. By doing this small creatures like insects, moths, ants etc. If a living creature dies as a result, it can lead to accusations of causing its demise.

 

Even if someone has not kept a fast on Nirjala Ekadashi, then he should not consume rice on this day. On this day, it is forbidden to consume vegetables such as brinjal, carrot, turnip, etc., in addition to rice.
